Remote Network Administration

Remote administration refers to any method of controlling a computer from a remote location.

Software that allows remote administration is becoming increasingly common and is often used when it is difficult or impractical to be physically near a system in order to use it, or in order to access web material that is not available in one's location, for example viewing the BBC iPlayer from outside the United Kingdom. A remote location may refer to a computer in the next room or one on the other side of the world. It may also refer to both legal and illegal (i.e. hacking) remote administration (Wikipedia)

If you were the network administrator for a company discuss some of the benefits and drawbacks of using remote administration.

6 comments:

  1. Benefits:
    1) Allow you to work from home or any other location (e.g. another country), since it allows you to access your computer at work.
    2) Its fast and cost-efficient. For e.g move files quickly between PCs.
    3) All internet based devices such as Laptops, PDAs and Smartphones can be used to take advantage of remote access.
    4) All connections to your remote desktop are encrypted both upwards and downwards, to ensure your communications are safe from hackers.

    Drawbacks:
    1) Limited security as it leads to vulnerabilities in the corporate network. Thus, putting the company's system at risk.

  2. Be careful not to confuse remote administration with remote access. Remote administration is one use of remote access. People can also use remote access to access their corporate emails from their PDA and smartphones. Remote administration deals strictly with administering a network from a remote location.

  3. I have been doing some amount of reading and i came across the term rollover network cabling, can you explain it a little more maybe in class? and also since we've been talking about VPN's and remote access and administration, would web OS quailfy in this category as well?

  4. Well, a rollover cable is not really one that is used for network connectivity. It is usually used to connect a terminal to a router, for the purposes of programming the router. It is usually identified by two things:
    1. It can have a different color from the other cables
    2. The wires are swapped on both ends, for example pin 1 on one end is matched to pin 8 on the other end and so on, thus the name "rollover"

A Web Operating System (Web OS) can mean different things, in fact there is Palm WebOS which is a mobile OS for smart phones. Also WebOS can refer to an OS that runs over the Internet. Additionally, a Web OS can also be a traditional OS solely responsible for supporting web applications or can even mean a desktop system dedicated to providing Web Access. So it does not fall in the category directly, however WebOS can be implemented by use of VPNs

    Hope this information is helpful

  5. Benefits:-

    1) Remote Control- the ability to remotely control a networked device is a must have in any remote administration scenario. This will provide me the administrator with the ability to remotely control any computer provided it is connected to the internet.

    2) Automated tasks- remote administration software that allows automation of tasks and jobs will very quickly and effectively save time. Administration tasks can be automated over as many computers or servers as required and even segmented into individual, group or global levels, to ensure flexibility. These jobs can be configured to run once, run on demand or to run automatically on a schedule.

    3) Remote Power Control- A more advanced remote administration tool is the ability to remotely shutdown, restart or power on a device. Servers and workstations can be shutdown on schedule to reduce energy costs, or on demand when required. Also, provided the devices have the Wake-On-LAN feature, they can be configured to start automatically or on demand also.

    4) Multiple Sessions- As an administrator with the ability to handle concurrent problems affecting different users’ computers simultaneously, from my own workstation, desk-side and off-site calls can be dramatically reduced. This in turn leads to a reduction in resource costs, human, energy etc.

    5) Online Inventory- the task of keeping up to date inventory of all network devices is one that haunts any administrator. Using remote administration tools to compile the inventory makes it easier. Hardware and software can all be monitored and administered remotely.

  6. Remote administration saves the network administrator

Time: where by he/she doesn’t have to be at the office in cases of a problem with the server or even clients, since he can connect remotely …
Fatigue: as an administrator of a organization, when there is a problem, persons always come looking for you … It is pretty fatiguing to leave what you are doing and attend to them, and sometime it might be something minor. Gladly, I can remotely connect to their machines and fix these problems without leave my comfortable chair.
    Security problems: monitor employees …
Thinking about this, there are many advantages ….

Sadly, there are hackers out there, who may just want to get in your network for fun and play around with settings and data… remote administration involves remote access, with public IP address which makes it somewhat easer for hackers to “get in.”
